Lillie Mae Foskey CHESAPEAKE - Lillie Mae Foskey departed this life suddenly and unexpectedly Nov. 2, 2010 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was born Nov. 23, 1912 in Hyde County, North Carolina to the late Mayhue and Jennie Foskey. Lillie May referred to herself as "Kool" with a capital "K" and was proud of her ability to spell well. One of her famous quotes was "You jealous?", speaking of her age and her memory. Her love of hairstyling was one of her most treasured accomplishments. Miss Foskey received her associate, bachelors and doctorate of cosmetology degrees, and was a cosmetologist for more than 55 years. She was the proud owner of Foskey's Beauty Salon in Lambert's Point on 38th Street and Bowden Ferry Road in Norfolk. She taught cosmetology at Hicks and Wards Corner Beauty Academies. Miss Foskey was a member of the National Beauty Culturists' League of Washington, D.C., as the secretary treasurer for many years, until her retirement in 1997. She was a soror of the Theta Nu Sigma National Sorority, a division of the National Beauty Culturists' League. She was inducted into their hall of fame in February 2003 and named Woman of the Year in 2006. Lillie Mae was predeceased by her parents, Mayhue and Jennie Foskey; her brother, James Foskey; son, Milton Little Sr.; and grandson, Milton Little Jr. She is survived by a loving and devoted granddaughter, Olivia Kearney (Louis); a nephew, James Sharp; five great-grandchildren, 17 great-great-grandchildren, cousins, and a host of friends. Sincere thanks are extended to dedicated friends and caretakers, Mary Babcock, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Crews, Sentara Pace Program, and Sentara Nursing Home in Chesapeake, and her great-granddaughter, Felicia Edwards. A viewing will be held Sunday, Nov. 7, from noon to 3 p.m. at Hale Funeral Home. The funeral will be conducted Monday, Nov. 8, at 11 a.m., at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. Keith Jones. Sister Foskey was such a joy to be around. She was so encouraging to me and my daughter. We will surely miss her quick wit and keen spelling. She was hard to keep up with when she started to spell quickly. She lived a full life and heaven is smiling now by her presence. Our sympathy to the family.

IT WAS A PLEASURE BEING AROUND SLICK WITH ALL THE VOLUNTEER WORK WE DID TOGETHER THROUGHT OUT NORFOLK. THE SPELLING KEPT A LOT OF US MENTALLY ALERT, NEVER A DULL CONVERSATION. SLICK WILL BE MISSED BY ALL WHO KNEW HER.
