M. Herman Beachum, 90, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at home with his wife, daughter, and granddaughter by his side. He was the son of the late Mamie and Fisher Beachum of Polkton, NC. He was one of 12 Children, 5 boys and 7 girls. Only 3 of the children remain, Margie Drye of Polkton, NC, Vivian Nance of Albemarle, NC and Haywood Beachum of Glenville, GA.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Myrtle Hayes Beachum and his daughter, Harriet Beachum Sadler and her husband, George Sadler. He was blessed to have 2 grandchildren, Denise McKinney Mann and Michael McKinney; 4 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild. He also had 8 step grandchildren; 6 step great-grandchildren and a step great-great grandchild.
Mr. Beachum survived World War II in the Army under General Patton as one of his SpearHeaders with the 737 Tank Battalion and he proudly served his country. He retired as a pipefitter for Shop 56, Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He also retired from the Seaboard and Norfolk and Southern Railroads.He was a Member for many years at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9382 on Pughsville Road, Suffolk, VA.
Herman was a great Father, Husband, Papa and Great Granddaddy, Friend and Brother to all of us who loved him very much. He will be greatly missed.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel by Rev. Tom Potter. The family will receive friends in the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Online condolences may be made at www.lovingfuneralhome.com.
