Norfolk - Mrs. Mable M. Harden of Norfolk, Virginia passed away Thursday, December 20, 2012 at CAMC Memorial Division Hospital in Charleston, West Virginia. She was born on December 19, 1927 to the late Rev. Basil and Dora Hooker. She lived in Lamberts Point and Ingleside in Norfolk, Virginia for many years. She was married to the late Wilbur Harden of Birmingham, Alabama. Her brothers were Frederick Douglas Hooker, Walter Hooker, and Joseph Hooker and one sister Evelyn Hooker-Slaughter (Moses) all of whom preceded her in death.
Mrs. Harden worked at Norfolk Redevelopment Housing Authority as a Social Worker, where she retired. Prior to her work as a Social Worker she also worked at a Norfolk Bank as a Clerk. For many years she also worked at Sunlight Laundry and Dry Cleaners on Princess Anne Road in Norfolk.
She is survived by her two daughters, Phyllis Harden Carter (Hazo), Charleston, West Virginia and Sheila Harden-Franklin (William) of San Antonio, Texas. She has two grandchildren, Angela Carter, of Charleston, West Virginia and Chelsea Thomas, (Dana) of San Antonio, Texas; and one great-grandchild Mayson Thomas also of San Antonio. Her nephews are Joseph Hooker Jr., Shelton Hooker, Eric Hooker, Moses Slaughter, and Eric Slaughter; her deceased niece, Rita Slaughter; her deceased nephew, Walter Hooker, Jr. She is also survived by a host of other relatives, well- wishers and friends.
Services will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. at her home church, St. John AME Church at 545 Bute Street, Norfolk, VA, with the Rev. John Burton officiating. She was very active in the church and served on the Usher Board. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John AME Church. Condolences may be sent to Hale Funeral Home, 2100 Ballentine Boulevard, Norfolk, VA.
