Mary Dixon Obituary

Mary Cheek Dixon PORTSMOUTH - Mary Cheek Dixon of the 2400 block of Staunton Ave. departed this life Friday, April 2, 2010, in Sentara Nursing Center, Portsmouth. She was born May 14, 1922 to the late Lillie and Samuel Cheek in Warrenton, N.C. Mrs. Dixon was the widow of Deacon James A. Dixon. She was a member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully on the Deaconesses Board and the Senior's Ministry. She is survived by her caregiver and niece, Marilyn Dixon-Grant (Lindsey); godniece, Melissa Ellis-El of Suffolk; stepdaughter, Gwendolyn Blue; nieces, Mary Stanford, Ruby Burnette, Valerie and Brenda Cheek of New Jersey, Sylvia Harrell of Portsmouth; nephews, Charles Turner of Portsmouth, Nathaniel and Cornell Burgess of New York, and Joseph Brunette of New Jersey; two stepgrandchildren; three brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law; several other extended nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by Bishop Curtis E. Edmonds Sr. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Viewing will begin in Corprew Funeral Home at noon Friday. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.
