Mary Noel
Newport News - On January 19, 2012, Mary L. Noel left this world and began her journey back to God. Born on December 5, 1918, in Assumption, Illinois, the daughter of Ernest and Myrtle Lloyd, Mary passed away at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, James W. Noel. Mary is survived by her daughter, Linda Ibsen and her husband, Ronald Ibsen, of Boulder, Colorado, and her son, James W. Noel Jr., and his wife, Vickie Noel, of Williamsburg, Virginia. Mary is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Captain Christopher Ibsen, USAF, Katy Ibsen, James W. Noel III and Jonathan Noel. She is also survived by her sister, Margery Doyle, and her husband, Patrick, of Springfield, Illinois and several nieces and nephews.
Mary attended Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois and was a 75 year member of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity. She was very proud of her affiliation with her fraternity and that her daughter and granddaughter also became members of Pi Beta Phi. Mary held several administrative positions throughout her life, however she particularly enjoyed her tenure at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She worked at the college for over ten years in the Philosophy and Economics Departments. During her years in Lancaster, Mary was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and always remembered her time there with great fondness.
Mary was a "Norman Rockwell" mother and grandmother, who could bake a cherry pie or knit a sweater with the best of them. Her devotion to her family was unsurpassed and her grandchildren meant the world to her. She left this earth a better place than she found it.
Services for Mary are being privately held with family. Should anyone wish to make a donation in her name please contribute to the Pi Beta Phi Foundation (pibetaphifoundation.org).

Arrangements by Amory Funeral Home, Grafton.
