Melissa Granlund Obituary

Melissa R. Granlund VIRGINIA BEACH - Melissa Raye Granlund, 38, passed away Nov. 26, 2010 at Virginia Beach General Hospital following a brief but intense bout with cancer. Melissa was born in Apple Valley, Calif., July 31, 1972. She grew up in nearby Barstow before traveling from base to base with her father in the Marine Corps and later with her husband in the Navy. She is survived by her husband, son, parents, sister, two brothers, grandmother, and many very close aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins from Virginia, Ohio, California, Texas, Mississippi, and Washington State. Her father, retired U.S. Marine Corps Master Sgt. Victor Norris Sr., wife, Gloria and family reside in Hampton. Her mother, Laurie Rammel, husband Bill and family reside in Kettering, Ohio, near her sister, Geneva Biggerstaff and family, and her brother, Jerome Norris. Her brother, U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Victor Norris Jr. and family reside in Cibolo, Texas. Her grandmother, Susan Kastner, and family reside in Barstow, Calif. Melissa married a Navy corpsman, Rodney Granlund June 17, 1989 at MCAS Yuma, Ariz. Their son, Jonathon, was delivered Nov. 25, 1992, while Rodney was deployed to the Persian Gulf. Melissa enjoyed playing basketball as a young girl. When physically limited later on, she liked to crochet rugs and to cross-stitch. Melissa was proud that she earned a college degree in 1995 but wanted to go further. She had many friends in her various support groups and in her Baha'i and Christian faiths. Melissa particularly looked forward to talking to her Grandma Sue every night for many years. Whenever asked, "Missy" always answered that she was "hanging in there." Melissa managed to hang in there for her son's 18th birthday before going home to be with her beloved "bampa" and other family members who preceded her in glory. More than 20 family members from five states said their good-byes in person during her last few weeks. Many unable to do so posted remembrances on her Facebook page. Her ashes will be spread. Her father will hold a memorial service Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. at Phoebus United Methodist Church, 300 E. Mellen St., in Phoebus, Va. Love you lots, Melissa.

We are truly going to miss you my sweet Missy, or as your nephews call you, Aunt Mimi. We trust you are in the arms of the Lord resting in peace without pain or suffering, being sweet 16 again, and loving your heavenly life. Save me a spot, we'll meet again in a better life with Jesus Christ.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss Rod and Jonathon.. My prayers are with you and the entire family during this difficult time. I had the pleasure of meeting Melissa while working in the pharmacy at NMCP where unfortunately she was a patient many times and would have to come by the pharmacy to get her prescriptions. I also was able to build a friendship over the years since i have worked and while Rod was stationed here again. She was a very wonderful person/friend and i will miss her. Please remember that her journey has ended here on earth but she has gone to be with the LORD where she will never suffer again from all her health issues.
