Mildred Wynkoop Obituary

Mildred M. Wynkoop VIRGINIA BEACH - Mildred M. Wynkoop, 93, died April 8, 2010, in Virginia Beach. Born in Glass Lake, N.Y., on March 6, 1917, she was the youngest of John and Jessie French Mosher's eight children. Upon the death of her parents, Edith, Florence, Nettie and Ida Mosher, her father's sisters, welcomed her into their home. With their support, she graduated from Troy High School and Russell Sage College (1938). Mildred taught typing and business classes in Downsville and Andes, N.Y. Her first teaching job brought her lifelong friends, a community she would call home for nearly 60 years, and best of all, the love of her life. She married Wallace Marvin Wynkoop on the lawn of the Mosher family home in Crooked Lake, N.Y., on July 12, 1941. Wally preceded her in death in 1999, 18 days after their 58th anniversary. After teaching, she worked in Wynkoop's Pharmacy and as bookkeeper for the Town of Colchester. Mildred was a proud member of the American Legion Auxiliary and gave countless hours of dedicated service to Colchester Community Church, as treasurer, and to the Order of the Eastern Star, where she followed her mother-in-law's example as District Deputy Grand Matron. Mildred was disciplined, competitive and athletic. Introduced to golf at age 40, it became a source of great pleasure, both as a player and a fan. In 1997, the Wynkoops moved to Atlantic Shores Retirement Community where Mildred enjoyed her neighbors and lived independently until after her 90th birthday. Harbourway assisted living provided a cherished home for more than two years and extraordinary care in her final days. Mildred is survived by her daughter, Marilyn; son-in-law, Dr. Robert T. Banes; and her grandson, Robby, all of Virginia Beach. Courtney Funeral Home in Walton, N.Y. is in charge of arrangements. The funeral service will be held at Colchester Community Church in Downsville on Wednesday, April 14, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Paige Cemetery. At her request, memorial donations may be made to Colchester Community Church, P.O. Box 305, Downsville, NY 13755 or Courthouse Community U.M. Church, 2708 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23456.
