Virginia Beach - Morris F. Cherry, Jr., of Virginia Beach, VA, died Wednesday, February 26 surrounded by his family. The Corsicana, TX native was born September 10, 1921 to Morris F. and Dolly Cherry. He was raised by his late aunt and uncle, Lily and Floyd Goodwin of Dallas, TX. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Jack Cherry & William Cherry Myers. Morris was a former member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He served his country in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater in World War II on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Cowpens (CVL 25) and was an active participant in the ship's annual reunion in Cowpens, SC. After his military service, he worked as an Electronics Technician for NAVELEX in Portsmouth, VA, travelling the world to work on equipment at Navy communications facilities and retiring in 1985. After retiring from civil service, he worked as a consultant for various private sector engineering firms. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, genealogy, ham radio (call signal K4IQX), and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Patricia Alton Cherry; three sons: Michael J. Cherry and wife Rose of Zachary, LA, Stephen A. Cherry and wife Sandra, Thomas F. Cherry and fiancé Shannon Hudson; two daughters: Susan Cherry Clark, Melissa Cherry Barstow and husband Thomas, all of Virginia Beach, VA; twelve grandchildren: Denise and David Gregory, Lisa and Lori Warm, Michael Cherry, Jr. and wife Sharlene, Sarah, Edward, Nicholas, and Patrick Clark, Andrew, John Michael, and Graham Barstow, Stephan, Brynne and Myles Cherry; two great-grandchildren: David Gregory Jr. and Rachel Clark; and various nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6-7 PM, with a service to follow at 7 PM, Monday, March 3, 2014, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach, VA.
