Ollie Burton Bates, III
Virginia Beach - Capt. Ollie Burton Bates, III U.S.N.R. (ret.) passed away November 9, 2012 at a local hospital. Originally from St. Albans, W.V., he was a graduate of West Virginia University and a longtime resident of Virginia Beach. He was employed by Mid-Valley Products and was a former chair of the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee and an active member of the Hampton Roads American Logistics Association, St. Andrews United Methodist Church, Larkspur Civic League, and Vets House board of directors. He gave generously of his time to many charities, volunteer organizations, friends and family.
A beloved husband and father, he is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Judy Awtrey Bates; daughter, Stefanie Eye and her husband Tim, daughter, Heather Lewis and husband Neal; and five grandchildren: David, Jacob, and Grace Eye, Mallory and Griffin Lewis.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm, Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, November 15, 2012 at St. Andrews United Methodist Church.
