Phyllis Burtcher Obituary

Phyllis C. Burtcher ELIZABETH CITY - Phyllis Chambers Burtcher, 69, of 1393 Nixonton Road, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2010 at her residence. Born in Currituck County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Albert Ray Chambers Sr. and Martha Josephine Lowers Chambers. Ms. Burtcher had belonged to the Salvation Army Church and had attended New Community Church. She was the past secretary of the Nixonton Ruritan Club, a member of the Elizabeth City Moose Lodge, The Lucky Lady Bugs, and the Red Hat Society. Ms. Burtcher is survived by her daughter, Teresa DeVaughn of Gambles, Md.; sons, Randy Griggs of Elizabeth City and Charles David Griggs of California; sisters, Jean Ward of Winfall, N.C., Peggy Byrum of Kelford, N.C., and Lorene Curley of Eure, N.C.; brothers, Joe Chambers of Camden, N.C., and William "Wiggle" Chambers of Creswell, N.C.; her very special significant other, James L. "Jim" Sawyer; eight grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Charles E. Griggs and Carl F. Burtcher; a sister, Shirley C. Ingram; and brothers, Albert Ray Chambers Jr. and Gary Dean Chambers. A funeral will be conducted Thursday, Dec. 9, at 11 a.m. in Twiford's Memorial Chapel with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. immediately following the chapel service in the lobby of the funeral home, and other times at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 404 Jessup Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.twifordfh.com.
