Rachel Blachman

Rachel G. Blachman PORTSMOUTH - Rachel Grossman Blachman, 91, died peacefully in her home March 31, 2011. Mrs. Blachman, a native of Galesburg, Ill., was the widow of Zalmon I. Blachman since his death in 1979. She and her late husband were among the founding families of Temple Sinai where she was an active member of the Sisterhood and Hadassah. Left to cherish her memory are three children, Michael J. Blachman (Paula), Leah Rishona Blachman, Frances Blachman (Doug Gallant); two granddaughters, Dara B. Demner (Maury) and Erica B. Hitchings (Seth). Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her sister, JoAnn G. Langhaus. The family expresses their deepest appreciation for the love and care provided by her caregivers Joyce, Shirley and Iris. A funeral will be held at noon Monday, April 4, at Temple Sinai by Rabbi Arthur Z. Steinberg. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will be sitting shiva at 4223 Hatton Point Lane, Monday and Tuesday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Blachman Family Fund, c/o The Tidewater Jewish Foundation, 5000 Corporate Woods Drive, Suite 200, Virginia Beach, VA 23462 or Temple Sinai, 4401 Hatton Point Road, Portsmouth, VA 23703.
