Virginia Beach - Richard Andrew Hammersberg, 41, of Virginia Beach passed away on February 16 in Virginia Beach.
He was born on August 1, 1972 in Portsmouth, VA., and grew up in the McKinley section of Augusta County. He graduated from Waynesboro High School and received a bachelor's degree from Old Dominion University. He was selected for law review while earning his law degree at Pepperdine University, in Malibu, CA.
He worked as a corporate entertainment attorney for the Polygram recording company and later for Epic Records and MGM Studios. After returning to Virginia, he was self-employed as a website designer. He became an enthusiastic supporter of Red Feather Development Group of Boseman, Montana, which partners with American Indian natives to develop and implement sustainable housing with their communities. He participated personally in several housing builds on the Hopi reservation in Arizona and the Northern Cheyenne reservation in Montana.
Rich is survived by his mother, Jane Smith of Virginia Beach; father, Dr. Jon Hammersberg and wife, Freda of Spottswood, VA, brother, Erik Hammersberg and wife, Janell of Fishersville, VA. He also leaves behind an aunt, Mary Turner and husband, Ken of Richmond; aunt, Lois Lowry of Falmouth, ME; cousin, Rebecca Robertson and her daughter, Julia of Richmond, who held a special place in Rich's heart. He is also survived by cousins, Judy and Randi Gardiner, Kim Tull, and Chris Gardiner, all of California; and a long-time friend, Jerry Riddick of Norfolk.
A private burial will take place in Spottswood, VA, prior to a memorial service at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the Stuarts Draft Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 1870 Stuarts Draft Highway, Stuarts Draft, VA. The family will receive friends following the service.
A celebration of life service for Virginia Beach friends will be held at a later date.
