Mount Gilead - Richard McKenzie Whirlow, 84 of Mount Gilead, passed away, Monday night, February 27, 2012 at Pinehurst Health Care & Rehab Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday March 2, at Mount Gilead First Baptist Church. Rev. Zach Dawes will officiate and internment will follow in Sharon Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Thursday night March 1, at Edwards Funeral Home in Mount Gilead.
Mr. Whirlow was born January 28, 1928 in Rowan County, to the late William Terry and Telka Baston Whirlow. Mr. Whirlow was a retired Navy veteran, having served in World War II, Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a member of Mount Gilead First Baptist Church and Blackmer Masonic Lodge 127.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Smith Whirlow.
He is survived by his son, Terry Lindsay Whirlow and wife LlewEllyn of Raleigh and daughter, Jana Whirlow Coffin and husband, Tris of Virginia Beach, Va. He was grandfather to Trey Whirlow of Raleigh, Jeremy Gray of Charleston, S.C. and Allyson Coffin of Virginia Beach, Va.
