Ruth Craun Obituary

Ruth C. Craun CHESAPEAKE - On Nov. 27, 2010, as the sun broke through the darkness Jesus Christ said to His child: Ruth, you have been through enough; today you will join me in paradise. I have prepared a place for you. I allowed you to depart this life in your home with Venus, your cat, on your bedside. Now, I will wrap my arms around you and carry you to your new home. Ruth was a loving kind and compassionate mom, grandma, great-grandma, great-great-grandma, and friend. Ruth Clift Craun was born June 19, 1917 in Roanoke, Va., to Julia Cunningham Clift and George Thomas Clift. Ruth moved to Portsmouth at an early age; and was a graduate of Wilson High School and a homemaker. She was predeceased by her parents; her former husband, Alvin E. Craun; a brother, John Clift; four sisters, Carey Lee Lovin, Lucy Whitehurst, Minney Cherry, and Margaret Turner; a son, David; two daughters, Emily Louise Craun and Lynda Faye Stillwell; a great-grandson, David Earl "Turtle" Gardner; a niece, Thelma King; a nephew, Charles Whitehurst; and a great-nephew, Michael Hoffman. She is survived by her daughter, Patsy Rose Gardner; two sons, Donald W. Craun and wife Fay Throneburg of Chesapeake, and William Robert "Bobby" Craun and wife Penny of Zuni; a son-in-law, Edward Stillwell of Norfolk; a niece, Margie Hoffman of Chesapeake; nine grandchildren; 10 great- grandchildren; three great- great-grandchildren; and eight other relatives whom she raised. A celebration of her home going will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, in St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 4811 High St. W., Portsmouth, with the Rev. Ray Owen, of Great Bridge Baptist Church, officiating. Burial of her cremains will be private in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family would like to thank the Chesapeake Regional Hospital Hospice and in particular Drs. Karen Lehew and Joel Bundy, who showed so much love and compassion in caring for their loved one. Ruth's children would also like to thank Dorothy Brandt, who was her friend, bingo partner, bowling teammate, and shopping partner. Thank you Dorothy for all you did throughout the years. Mom, I wrote on the guest book that I did not know exactly what I will do since you are no longer here, but that is not really true. I will do exactly as you have and you have taught your children to do. Love and enjoy the rest of us. you were stuburn, gentle, kind and compasionate. As we gathered afor your homegoing yesterday, I know you were looking down at us as you sat in that overstuffed fethered chair with white feathers surrounding you, as you told Pat of your dream, and being seranaded by Angles, I know you were pleased. I pray that I can be as calm and gracious as you when I face my last days. I love you mom and there wii always be a little hole in my heart. But I want the world to know I will see you, when I see Jesus and once again walk hand in hand with you.
