Ruth Hammond Obituary

Ruth Hammond VIRGINIA BEACH - On Sunday morning, Oct. 17, 2010, her Lord and Savior called Garnett Ruth C. Hammond, born July 27, 1938, home to be with Him. For two years she had been fighting and battling her fourth cancer. She spent the last two years bedridden in her home. During the whole time, not once did she lose faith, and remained in high spirits and strong willed. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Orville L. Hammond; her children, Woodrow McFaden, Wayne Hammond, Keith Hammond, Diana Fish, and Denise Faye Harmon; stepchildren, Beth Marshall, Cathey Hammond, Earnie Hammond, and Debbie Latta; 18 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, four sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was born in North Carolina and was raised in Norfolk, and lived the rest of her life in Virginia Beach. She was predeceased by her stepfather and mother, Bural and Ruth Allen; a sister, Gale and two nieces, Cindy and Sharron. She was a member of 14 years at Faith Temple Church in Norfolk. She was employed by Anchor Canteen and worked in the cafe at The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk for 22 years. She was not just a cashier but was considered a legend. She never once missed a day of work, no matter how sick she was. She felt blessed and honored to work at a job and with many people she dearly loved. She dedicated a lot of her time to cancer charities and benefits for cancer research, such as Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. She was very courageous and strong willed. She was a great inspiration to many people who were fighting to overcome their battle with cancer. The viewing will be held Thursday, Oct. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 East Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23502. The funeral will be Friday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Garden. The family will be hosting friends and family after the service at Faith Temple Church, 1173 George St., (stoplight diagonal from the funeral home), Norfolk. The church will be providing food and drinks. A donation has been set up by numerous people in honor of Ruth Hammond to help with medical and funeral costs. Donations may be sent to Norfolk Postal Credit Union, 150 W. Brambleton Ave., Norfolk, VA 23510.

It's hard to believe that in 3 days, since you passed. I can't remember the sound of your voice anymore, heartbroken. This year is the first year that it's not been a depressing month. As you probably know already, Haley is having a boy. My first grandbaby, a grandson, can you believe that, lol. I'm clueless when it comes to boys, lol. I think about you every day. I'm looking a lot more like you as I get older. Also favor Debbie too. I love you mom!

Momma it's been 12 years since you went home to heaven. I wish I could hear your voice one more time. I've forgotten what you sounded like. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you and know you're watching over me. I am the woman I am today cause of you, your strength, your faith, and the family values and morals you raised me up on. I couldn't have asked for a better mother. I am so proud to have been your daughter. I'm glad that I was able to be there for you when you were diagnosed with terminal cancer and everyday after that for 2 years til you passed. I love and miss you so much. I wish I was better at putting my thoughts and emotions in writing, but you know what's in my heart. You always did. Till we meet again momma. I love you

Ruth was a strong woman who was committed to her family and her church. She was very loved by her family, and especially by her youngest daughter Denise who vigilantly provided excellent care through out her illness. My prayers and love to the whole family.

THIS WAS MY GRANDMOTHERS FAVORIT SONG AND SHE IS SINGING THIS UP IN HEAVEN .I LOVE YOU GRANDMA.

"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.

T'was Grace that taught...
my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear...
the hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares...
we have already come.
T'was Grace that brought us safe thus far...
and Grace will lead us home.

The Lord has promised good to me...
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be...
as long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
and mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
a life of joy and peace.

When we've been here ten thousand years...
bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise...
then when we've first begun.

"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.

Never forget all the good times. She is gone from this earth but will live in your heart always. From time to time you will hear her voice in your head when your about to make a tough decision. When something great happens look up and smile because she has whispered into Gods ear to shower blessings upon you.

I will miss you Ruthie Poo. I always felt it was unfair for such a sweet, dear, giving, good person to suffer so greatly. May peace be with you. I know you are in heaven.
