Portsmouth - Shirley Hurdle Lassiter, 72, peacefully left this world on April 1, 2014.

The Nansemond County native lived in Portsmouth. She taught English in the Portsmouth and Norfolk Public School Systems over 30 years before retiring in 1997. Paying homage to her alma maters, she was active in both the I.C. Norcom High School and NSU alumni associations.

Left to cherish Shirley's life are her husband of 50 years, Steve, and daughters Glenda, DeShera Gay and Crystal. Also, her siblings: Edna Knight, Eliza Priscilla Mason, Ernestine Cassell, William "Glenn" Hurdle (Claudette), Ella Bynum (Ed), Russell Hurdle, Harriett Hurdle, Curtis Hurdle, Vernon Hurdle and Carolyn Moore. Holding family in high regard, she enjoyed being an aunt to generations of nieces and nephews, a second mom to "son" Tony Spencer (Kim), and a "grandmother" to Kaveena Woodward Vang.

Viewing will be Friday from 12 Noon to 8 p.m. and her homegoing celebration will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at Union Baptist Missionary Church, where Shirley served as Political Informer and an usher. The interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Chesapeake at 10 a.m. on Monday. Donations may be made payable to the Girls, Inc. Center for Youth (memo: the Shirley Lassiter Scholarship Fund), 5905 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth, VA 23701.
