Onancock - Mrs. Shirley Shaw Walton (97), of the Hermitage on the Eastern Shore, Onancock, VA, went to be with the Lord, 18 April 2014. Mrs. Walton was born in Montclair, NJ, on 17 August 1916, and moved to Washington, D.C. as a child. She attended Western High School where she was captain of the women's basketball team and competed on the rifle team. After graduation, she attended Winthrop College, SC, for one year, followed by secretarial school. She had various jobs, including private secretary for one of the partners of Covington, Burlington, Atchison, and Shorb Law Firm in Washington, D.C. In 1940, she married Colonel (US Army Retired) Robert Lucius Walton of Chevy Chase, Washington, D.C.
Mrs. Walton spent the first 28 years of their marriage accompanying her husband as he served in the U.S. Army. She often served as a community volunteer in their various locations including Texas, Austria, Kentucky, Rhode Island, Taiwan, Virginia, and North Carolina. After her husband retired from the Army in 1968, they moved to Catonsville, MD, where Mrs. Walton was a member of the Catonsville Women's Club and also immersed herself in extensive art instruction. In 1981, they moved to Franktown on Virginia's Eastern Shore. There, they enjoyed church and community activities, as well as boating, golf, bridge, and recreational travel. In 2008, they moved into the assisted living community of The Hermitage on the Eastern Shore. There, Mrs. Walton continued such recreational activities as painting and bridge. Her art work, which began in the 1970's, included portraits, landscapes, and fruit and flower settings, and is displayed in many family's and friends' homes.
On March 16, 2011, her husband, for over 70 years, departed to be with the Lord. Theirs was a true romantic marriage of love, dedication, sacrifice, and loyalty, and now she has joined him for eternity in heaven. Mrs. Walton's survivors include her sister, Mary Snider of Bradenton, FL, her step-brother, Christopher Duffy of Bainbridge Island, WA, three of her four children (Barbara Kaiser passed away in 2013), Ann Walton of Northfield, VT, Rosemary Prange of Ellicott City, MD, and LTC (US Army Retired) Robert Walton of Chester, VA; eight grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren. Mrs. Walton was a member of the Huguenot Society of Washington, D.C., the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Viewing will be at the Holland Funeral Home (7342 Lankford Highway, Nassawadox, VA 23413) on 27 April from 1 to 2:30 .m. At 4 p.m., a memorial service will be held at The Hermitage on the Eastern Shore (23610 North St, Onancock, VA 23417). Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at Ft. Myer, VA, at a date to be determined.
