Sudie Reed Obituary

Sudie Virginia Reed CHESAPEAKE - God's devoted servant, Sudie Virginia Reed, having completed the work asked of her was peacefully carried to heaven on the evening of Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010. Sudie was the youngest of eight children born to Roy and Lula Barrett Chambliss Sr. in Franklin, Va., Dec. 25, 1942. She received her early education in Franklin Public Schools and graduated from Hayden High School in 1961. While attending high school she served as class secretary and flag bearer in the high school marching band. Upon graduation from high school, she attended Virginia State University for one year before transferring to Norfolk State University where she graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business education. Sudie had a passion for education and children. She began her teaching career as a substitute teacher for Chesapeake Public Schools. Later she joined the education team as an elementary and middle school teacher retiring in 2003 after 13 years of teaching in the fifth grade. She joined East End Church of God in Franklin at an early age and remained a member there until her death. She moved to Chesapeake in 1975 where she attended Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Norfolk for more than 30 years. On April 29, 1967, she was united in holy matrimony to George Francis Reed in Franklin and was blessed with two children, Eugene F. Reed and Pauline Reed Achua. She was a faithful wife, a devoted mother, a cherished friend and a committed Christian. Sudie was a compassionate person and a friend to all who knew her. She was an anointed woman who lived by faith and the word of God. She possessed a spirit of generosity and hospitality that compelled her to help those who touched her life. She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, George; her adoring children, Eugene and Pauline; son-in-law, Christopher F. Achua; daughter-in-law, Stephanie Sylver Reed; two brothers: Roy W. Chambliss Jr., and James Chambliss; one sister, Ruby Chambliss Lawrence; two grandchildren, Gregory and Zora Achua; five nieces, Marie Lawrence, Cathy Lawrence, Johnesta Blount, Belinda Reid, and Vickie Reid; three nephews, Jerome Reid, Alonzo Chambliss and Eric Reid; and two sisters-in-law, Pauline D. Sam, and Eunice M. Barnes. She also leaves a host of cousins, other relatives, devoted friends and her special Golden Girls. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Lula Barrett Chambliss Sr. and four sisters, Evora Chambliss, Theresa Chambliss, Ella Chambliss, and Alma Chambliss Reid. Sudie was involved in her community as a cancer volunteer, member of the Norfolk Corps of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. Silhouettes, and she was a former member of the Coalition of 100 Black Women. She was one of the pillars of the family annually hosting Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner for the entire family for more than 30 years. In her retirement she enjoyed reading, spending time with her family and friends, traveling and her beautiful grandchildren. She will be missed by all of us. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, in East End Church of God, 401 East St., Franklin, VA 23851. For those unable to attend the funeral, a wake will be held Friday, Dec. 10, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Metropolitan Funeral Chapel, 120 W. Berkley Ave., Norfolk, VA 23523. Sudie and I worked together at Carver Intermediate in Chesapeake. She was a beautiful person (inside and out) and an excellent teacher!

Sudie is my first cousin and I remember the good days growing up when I visited Franklin Va. I will miss her but she is resting in Jesus from her labor. I would love to meet her children some time in the future. May God bless you.
