Thomas H. Wilson Obituary
Thomas H. Wilson
Virginia Beach - Family man, monkey aficionado, and UVA sports fanatic, Thomas H. Wilson, 62, went to heaven on June 19, 2013. He was born to Denis and Anne Wilson of Virginia Beach, and joins them; his brother, Gregory Wilson; mother-in-law, Barbara Capps, and cousin, Betty Anne Stephenson, in heaven.
Tom was Chief Operating Officer of the CPA firm Dixon Hughes Goodman, LLP. A member of the firm for 40 years, he helped grow it into the largest CPA firm in the South. He also proudly boasted winning the firm's annual Chili contest. A lifelong resident of Virginia Beach, he brought his business acumen to the city, including serving as chairman of the Virginia Beach Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce and fund raising for VB Rescue 8 and the EVMS Foundation.
Always a top student, Tom graduated with honors from University of Virginia, and continued to support education throughout his life, serving as chairman of the Tidewater Community College Board, treasurer of the Virginia Beach Library Foundation and president of the Virginia Beach Education Foundation and Cosmopolitan Club of Norfolk. He learned about and expressed his love for God as a member of the Virginia Beach United Methodist Church.
Tom's proudest accomplishment was creating a loving family. Thirty-seven years ago, a client of his said "You sure are smart and cute, would you like to meet my daughter?" He replied, "I need to see her picture first." Rosemary and Tom were engaged 3 months later. Their two daughters live in New York City with their growing families: Kari Clark, husband, Joseph, and daughter, Chloe; and Sarah Wilson Hou, husband, Daniel and expected daughter.
Tom enjoyed good food. He was an avid wildlife photographer, traveling to Panama, Kenya, and South Africa to photograph monkeys, lions and exotic birds. However, Tom's favorite destination was close to home - Ocean City, Maryland, home of Thrasher french fries.
He will be missed dearly by his immediate family; two brothers, Steve and Jerry; aunts, Betty Stephenson and Sister Anthony; niece, Emily Wilson; and dog, Charlie. We will be eternally grateful to our friends for their constant support, especially our friends and guardians Dr. Alexander and Dr. Alexandria Berger.
The family will receive friends and family Sunday, June 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hollomon-Brown Great Neck Chapel. A funeral service will be held Monday, June 24, at 11 a.m., at the Virginia Beach United Methodist Church on 19th St. A private burial service will follow in Newsoms, Va.
In lieu of flowers, we suggest memorial donations to a few institutions that Tom loved and supported: the Virginia Beach Education Foundation, the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad and the Virginia Beach Aquarium. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com
