Chesapeake - Velma Hertzler Garnand, 83, passed away at home on Monday, November 11, 2013, surrounded by her family. She was born on August 21, 1930 in Warwick County to the late Moses and Anna Wenger Hertzler. As well as Chesapeake and Newport News, Mrs. Garnand also resided many years in Sarasota, FL and Harrisonburg, VA.
She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Mennonite Church where she served as a Missions' delegate and on the Ladies Sewing Circle. She was a talented seamstress and was known for baking delicious pies. For many years Mrs. Garnand taught for Bible Study Fellowship, Int. in both Harrisonburg and Chesapeake. She was a sweet, friendly, compassionate woman who dedicated her life to the Lord and her family and many friends.
Mrs. Garnand is survived by her husband of 64 years, George "Johnny" Garnand. She is also survived by two daughters, Sheila Sullivan and husband, Frank, of Bridgeport, WV, and Teresa Hassard and husband, Marc, of Sarasota, FL; a son, Douglas Garnand of Chesapeake; a sister Elsie Rohrer and a brother Allen Hertzler, who both reside in Harrisonburg; six grandchildren, Ryan Waltrip, Adam Sullivan, Kristin Morris, Laura Sullivan, Bryce Garnand, and Shelby Garnand; and two great-grandsons, Levi Morris and Max Waltrip. She was preceded in death by a daughter Patricia Waltrip; a sister Mary Grove; and two brothers, Charles and Vernon Hertzler.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 PM Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Warwick River Mennonite Church, with a celebration of her life service immediately following at 2 PM in the church sanctuary. Interment will be in the church cemetery after the service.
The family will also greet friends at Mt. Pleasant Mennonite Church in Chesapeake on Friday, November 15, from 6 to 8 p.m.
