Wellington Lewis Obituary

Wellington H. Lewis BLUFFTON, S.C. - Wellington Harrill Lewis, known to many as "Wimpy," died at his home in Bluffton, S.C. on Dec. 30, 2010 of complications from Park- inson's disease. He was 91. Wellington Lewis was born in Fallston, N.C., on June 30, 1919, the son of John C. and Georgia Lewis. After graduating from Fallston High School, he worked his way through the University of North Carolina where he earned six varsity letters in track and cross country. He was a member of the Golden Fleece and the Order of the Grail. Upon graduation with a B.S. in commerce, he was commissioned in the Navy in April of 1942, and served as a supply officer on the USS Smith (DD-378) in the Pacific during World War II. He earned an M.B.A. from George Washington University in 1957. He retired from the Navy in 1970 as a captain and immediately went to work for the Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C., where he served as superintendent of documents and assistant public printer. After retiring from GPO, he helped his wife Peggy with her antique shop, "Treasures and Challenges," in Vienna, Va. He loved golf, gardening and softball, and played on the winning "over 80" team in the 1999 Senior Softball World Series. Mr. Lewis is survived by his second wife, Virginia; two children, Dr. Donald Wray Lewis of Norfolk and Sharon Lewis Morris of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; one granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Morris of Washington, D.C.; and a great-granddaughter, Hailey Wray Love of Washington, D.C. Two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Lewis Hull of Fallston, N.C., and Mrs. Polly Lewis Francis of Piscataway, N.J., also survive him. His first wife, Margaret Webster Lewis died in 1989. Interment will be Tuesday, April 19, at 3 p.m. in Arlington Memorial Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation; Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk; Capital Hospice in Falls Church, Va.; or Friendship United Methodist Church in Fallston, N.C.
