Wilbert L. New Sr.

Wilbert L. New Sr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Wilbert Leon New Sr., 81, passed away April 24, 2010 at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. He was born Dec. 31, 1928 in Kilmarnock, Va., to the late Alice Virginia and Walter Lynwood New. Wilbert served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II from 1945 to the early 1960s. He was employed at Hoffman Beverage (Budweiser) of Virginia Beach where he retired after 35 years. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Mae New; and daughter, Cheryl Rankin. Wilbert is survived by his son, Wilbert L. New Jr. and wife Bernadette; daughters, Sandra Patterson and husband Rusty, and Theresa Castelow and husband David; son-in-law, David Rankin; grandchildren, Herbert Walter Tittle III, Christina Yerby, Candy Patterson, Elizabeth Matthews; Stephen New; Benjamin New; David Castelow; and Daniel Castelow; a host of other family and friends. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 30, at the funeral home conducted by the Rev. William G. Beagle. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park.
