William H. Hopkins
Portsmouth - William (Bill) Hurd Hopkins, 86, passed away peacefully on Nov. 19, 2012 at his daughter's home surrounded by loving family. Born in Norfolk, VA to Charles and Olive (Baker) Hopkins, he graduated from Churchland High School and proudly served his country in WWII in the Army Air Corps. He worked in steel fabrication and construction but also enjoyed time spent as a flight instructor and fish spotter on the Chesapeake Bay. He was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 48 years, Leone (Sue) Hopkins. Left to cherish his memory are 2 daughters, Linda Cassmann and husband Dennis of Spicer MN; Sharon Alderson Winslow and husband Jon of Chesapeake; 5 grandchildren, Jim Cassmann and wife Tara of Harmony, MN; Jared Alderson and wife Jessica of Moyock, NC; Stephanie Alderson, Christopher Winslow, and Brooke Winslow all of Chesapeake; 2 great-granddaughters, Elianna Rae Cassmann of Harmony, MN and Evelyn Rose Alderson of Moyock, NC; brother, Charles Hopkins III and his wife Marie of Portsmouth. He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Melanie Cassmann.
He loved his family and was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved spending time with his family, especially while traveling and camping. He was devoted to caring for his two little dogs, Lucy and Peppi. His character can best be described with words such as honor, courage, heart, strength, dependability and love. He will be greatly missed by all.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated 1 PM Saturday, November 24th, at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church, with burial in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will greet friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Great Bridge Chapel on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
