William Haley Obituary

William J. Haley VIRGINIA BEACH - William J. Haley, known as "Bill" or "Pop," passed away Nov. 8, 2010. He was born Nov. 11, 1918 on the very first Veterans Day, in Summerville, Mass. He joined the U.S. Navy Dec. 7, 1941, the day Pearl Harbor was attacked, and served as a hospital corpsman for 27 years. He was a World War II and Korean War veteran, serving aboard many ships including his favorite USS Missouri. After retiring from the Navy, he worked at the Unpainted Furniture Store in Norfolk. He never met a stranger and was loved by all that he came in contact with. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Haley; a son, Stephen Haley; a daughter, Jan Harrison and her husband retired U.S. Capt. Ken Harrison, DC; two granddaughters, Megan Haley, U.S. Navy Lt. Brooke Caufield, MC, and her husband U.S. Navy Lt. Sean Caufield, MC; and one grandson, Chad Harrison. The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice, the staff at VA Palliative Care Unit and his personal caregivers for the wonderful care they provided during his last months of life. Friends are invited to join the family in a celebration and remembrance of Bill's life Nov. 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the home Bill and Dorothy shared in Virginia Beach. A graveside service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Bill has requested donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, The Boys Club of America or the American Red Cross. Pop, we'll miss you! Don't worry, "We stand the Watch." Arrangements are being handled by the Cremation & Burial Society of Hampton Roads.

To Jan and Family,
Take comfort in knowing that there is a very special place in heaven for dear sweet Pops. I will always cherish so many wonderful memories of him; and to share just one… I wonder how many angels he’s recruited to clip & save coupons. My life was better for having had the privilege of knowing him and I will miss him.
Love always,
Marty

Jan -- To all of you: the world has lost a gentleman with an impressive history of service to his country and love for his family. How wonderful that his legacy will live on in all that you and the grandchildren have done and will continue to do as the future unfolds. Moreover, the greatest gift is the love he gave to you and which you returned to him tenfold, especially throughout these last years, months and days of his life. How proud he must be as he watches over you. How fortunate for you that he was such a special dad.

We hold you all in our hearts - we love you, we miss you!
