She was called Winnie by her friends, Winifred by her relatives, and "Winkie" by her sister Katrina and cousins. She attended Swan Quarter High School and then two years of Louisburg College, where she met her true love, William Wallace Mangum of Bahama, N.C. Wallace and Winnie were married on July 29, 1939. While living in Gibsonville, N.C., her first son Bill was born. The threesome then moved to Pendergrass Street in Durham in 1942. Along came three more children: Phillip, Cathy and Trina. Winnie now had four children of her own but as a stay at home mom in a neighborhood of working dads and moms; she soon became the "neighborhood mom." Her house was open to all and there were times when her home held 15 to 20 children watching the Mickey Mouse Club, and later, American Bandstand. Winnie's home was always opened to relatives who came to Duke or UNC Hospitals for tests or operations. She was active in Braggtown Baptist Church, PTA for all her children, Durham Home Demonstration Association, and Watts/Durham County Hospitals Ladies Volunteering Auxiliary. Winnie lived in Durham for 46 years and made many friends whom she cared about and cared for all her life. In 1983, Wallace passed away and Winnie spent more time with her friends at the hospital volunteering. In 1986, her daughter Trina had her first child, Katy. Winnie became a caregiver for baby Katy. Then in 1987, Winnie was reunited with her high school sweetheart, Josh Cahoon. Together they attended their 50th high school reunion in Swan Quarter. Winnie and Josh were married on April 9, 1988. They lived in Norfolk on Thole Street for the next 21 years. Along with Josh, Winnie gained two more sons, Richard and Michael and their families. Winnie had wanted six children and now she had her six. Winnie and Josh enjoyed visiting kinfolks in Swan Quarter, "beaching it" at Kitty Hawk, boating with Richard and friends, and living life with each other, family and friends. They attended Wesley Memorial Methodist Church in Norfolk. After Josh's passing in 2008, Winnie moved to Charlotte, N.C., to be close to her family members. She enjoyed her assisted-living apartment at Elmcroft where she made more friends and enjoyed sight-seeing tours, out-to-eat trips, and rocking on the front porch. Winnie's earthly life came to an end on April 8, 2010 to begin her heavenly eternal life with Christ.
