Donald L. Bowers
Chesapeake - Donald L. Bowers was called home on March 12, 2013 to reside at the side of our Lord. Ever a shining example of Fatherhood, he possessed a quiet strength and abiding patience, his pure unselfishness and moral virtue made strong the bonds of his proudest legacy, his Family. As countless friends and family can attest, his door was always open to anyone seeking entry.
He was born on April 9, 1928 in Oswego, New York to Stanley Orville Bowers and Lena Sisley Porter Bowers. At the age of 18 he began employment with General Electric. He was called into service with the United States Army in 1950 during the Korean War, serving as staff sergeant in the Signal Corp until 1952. While stationed at Fort Meade, Maryland he met the love of his life, Lillian Thompson, and they were married on November 19, 1952.
They set out to raise a family in Syracuse, New York, Don resuming employment with GE while studying mechanical engineering at Syracuse University. GE offered an opportunity to transfer to a milder climate, so he moved the family to Chesapeake, Virginia in 1966. His career with GE spanned nearly four decades, he retired from the company in 1983. He enjoyed two significant milestones in 2012, celebrating a 60th wedding anniversary in November and being baptized into the Catholic faith in December.
He now rejoices with his parents, sister Joan Walrath, brother Robert Bowers, and grandson Michael Sancilio.
Cherishing his memory are his loving wife of sixty years, Lillian Bowers and his seven children, Dawn Bass and husband Tim, Deborah Parker, Denise Sancilio and husband Tony, Darlene Viola, Donald R. Bowers and wife Teresa, David Bowers and wife Susan, and Doreen Tupper. He will be remembered and adored by 15 grandchildren: Grace Parker Bitgood (Carleton), Russell Parker, Christopher Viola (Ashley), Matthew Viola (Erica), Anthony Sancilio, Christina Sancilio, Jessica Bowers, Donald R. Bowers II, Anna Bowers, Grace Bowers, Lili Suykerbuyk, Heidi Suykerbuyk, Victoria Tupper , and Andrew Tupper, and by seven great grandchildren: Jacie Jones, Benjamin and Madeline Viola, Samuel and Ella Viola and Parker and Peyton Bitgood.
The family is extremely blessed to have had such a loving, devoted Husband, Father and Grandfather.
A visitation will be at Baker-Foster Funeral Home, Bennett's Creek Chapel in Suffolk on Fri., Mar. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church on Saturday, March 16 at 11 a.m. Burial following the mass will be at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Don's memory be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of America in honor of Michael J. Sancilio.
