Ethelda C. Liwag

Norfolk - Norfolk, VA - Ethelda C. (Babe) Liwag, 81, died Friday, January 31, 2014 at Sentara Heart Hospital after a brief illness. Known as Babe to all who knew her, she was a long-time resident of Norfolk. A native of Mayodan, North Carolina, Babe was born to John D. and Viola Coleman as the twelfth child of a large family of eight brothers and four sisters, of which only she and one other sister remained. Babe was a fixture in her old Norfolk suburb, and she had a wealth of friends from all walks of life, most especially all of her bingo buddies, with whom she spent many fond hours. Babe traveled extensively throughout the world, and she had very fond memories of her time in London, England.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Exequiel (Ken) Liwag, who was retired from the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Merchant Marines, as well as a granddaughter, Caitlin Brett Liwag Sutcliffe. Babe is survived by a sole daughter, Lolita Liwag-Fickel and her spouse, Corey Fickel; three grandchildren, Alexis Liwag Sutcliffe and her partner Michael Dozier; Eamonn Kendal Liwag Sutcliffe, and Brett Thomas Liwag Sutcliffe, as well as one great-granddaughter, Olivia Caitlin Liwag Dozier who she absolutely adored. She also leaves behind her long-time companion, Earl Grey the cat.

An informal memorial service is planned for Thursday, February 6, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Smith and Williams Funeral Home located at 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CHKD in her name and in memory of Caitlin Sutcliffe, or to the or the .
