Virginia Beach - Mary Lou Elya passed into the arms of her Lord on Saturday, February 22, 2014. She was 80 years young.
Mary was born to the late Leonard L. and Dorothy Putnam Bisher on April 14, 1933 in Polk County, Iowa. Although she spent the last fifty years of her life in Virginia, Iowa was always home to her.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Walter E. Bisher, her only sister, Loretta Prewitt, husband of 34 years, William H. Slater and husband of 9 years, William C. Elya, Jr.
She was a member of Courthouse Community United Methodist Church and so much loved both her pastors and listening to the beautiful voice of Ms. Gretna Smith.
She is survived by one brother, Leonard Bisher, Jr. of Stuart, Iowa, three daughters, Teri Wszolek (Chris) and Cindy Wallace both of Virginia Beach and Mary Leckrone of Suffolk, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 1, at 11 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Rev. Randy McMillen will be officiating. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel is assisting the family.
The family wishes to thank both the nursing staff and physical therapy staff at Sentara Village Rosemont along with the nurses of Heartland Hospice for all their love and care.
