Chesapeake - Dr. W. Stanley Jennings, Sr., 87, of Virginia Avenue, South Norfolk, passed away Friday, March 7, 2014 in his home.
Born in Old Norfolk County, he was the son of the late Walter E. and Edna D. Jennings and was also predeceased by his first wife Emily D. Jennings, second wife, Annie B. Jennings and sister, Helon McPherson. Dr. Jennings served the community of Chesapeake as a dedicated family physician for 55 years and is known as the founding father of Chesapeake General Hospital. He was a graduate of Great Bridge High School, attended the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary, the University of Virginia and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia. He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served as a medic. Most of all, Dr. Jennings will be remembered as a driven, selfless, generous, passionate physician and family man. All of these qualities contributed to his vision and dogged determination to bring a hospital to the people of Chesapeake. A First Citizen of Chesapeake, with many lifetime accomplishments, he leaves a legacy of service and humility to all who knew him.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Dr. W. Stanley Jennings, Jr. and wife Judy, Jennifer J. Rossin and husband William, Beth J. Patch and husband Joe; step-children, Debbie J. Rountree and husband Billy and Tim Johnson; grandchildren, Tiffany, Mike, Wendy, Sarah, Kate, Rebecca, Bonnie, Tony, Bettie and Robert; twelve great-grandchildren; a nephew, Dr. Milton L. McPherson, as well as his extended family.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 12, at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. The interment with military honors will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.
