Virginia Beach - Rowland F. Filer, Jr. (Spoonie or Spunk) born August 23, 1923 went to be with his Lord on March 8th, 2014. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia and graduated from Maury High School class of 1941, joined the U.S. Navy and was discharged in 1946 when he began college at North Carolina State and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1950. He was a life member of Ruth Lodge #89 and was also a 32nd degree Scottish Right Mason and was a member of the Khedive Temple Shrine.

Rowland devoted his entire business life as the owner of Norfolk Sash and Door Company. He had an extensive life of service to his church and his community. He was extremely proud of his volunteer work with Sentara Hospital and also enjoyed watching Upward basketball at his church.

Rowland was an avid outdoor enthusiast. His greatest love besides his church, family and career was the many opportunities he had to spend with friends and family members, young and old, on hunting and fishing trips.

Rowland was predeceased by his beloved parents; Rowland F. Filer, Sr. and Mildred O. Filer, his only sister Carol and his wife Ann D. Filer and his daughter Hester Asman. He is survived by his children; Rowland F. Filer, III, Howard O. Filer and wife Sandra, Nancy S. Mason and Cecil Stanley Filer, their mother Margaret T. Filer; two stepsons Anthony and Frank Owens and a multitude of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his dear cousin Louis Shelton and wife May; and his sister in law Betty Starrette. He was truly loved by all the little ones who stole his heart and impressed him immensely with their unconditional love and honestly. He spent his last hours with his loving great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel on Thursday, March 13, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, March 14, at 11 a.m. at Great Neck Baptist Church, 1020 General Jackson Dr., Virginia Beach, VA.
