William Rogers Hartz Obituary
William Rogers Hartz

Waverly - William "Bill" Hartz died peacefully and surrounded by his family on March 18, 2014; he was nearing his 78th birthday. Bill was a lifelong resident of Waverly, save his time at Culver Military Academy, the University of Virginia, and his service to his country in the U.S. Army. He served as Mayor of Waverly from 1970 through 2000. Bill served more than the Town in his years of government; he was a vital member of the Jaycees, serving as President of the Waverly Jaycees, the Virginia Jaycees, and as Vice President of the United States Jaycees. Bill also was an integral part of the Virginia Municipal League, serving on the League's Executive Committee and as President from 1991-1992. Bill's lists of services to our local community are lengthy and known well to those who loved him.

The son of the late Arthur Paul Hartz and Mary Frances Rogers Hartz, Bill is survived by his wife, Beverly Pittman Hartz, whom he has loved for more than 35 years, along with his daughters, Lindsay Rogers Hartz of Henrico, Virginia, and Laura Pittman Hartz of Swansboro, North Carolina. He is also survived by his sister, Marylyn Hartz Leonard, who resides with her husband Reuben "Moe" Leonard, in Chesapeake, Virginia.

The family has conducted private services and appreciates the love and support of the many people who have reached out to express their condolences and love for Bill. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those wishing to make a contribution in Bill's memory do so via a donation to Camp Virginia Jaycee, a camp for children with special needs which was co-founded by Bill. Camp Virginia Jaycee accepts donations online at: www.campvajc.org/donate/index.html or via mail at: Camp Virginia Jaycee, Inc., P.O. Box 648, Blue Ridge, Virginia 24064. The family is being served by R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home Wakefield Chapel. Condolences may be posted at www.rwbakerfh.com.
