Robert E. Fillmore

Virginia Beach - Robert Earl (Bob) Fillmore, age 84, passed away on March 29, 2014 after courageously battling one medical condition after another over the last two years.

He was born in Hartford, Conn., on April 8, 1929, to Bernice Norris Fillmore and Earl Fillmore. He was the beloved husband to Rita S. Fillmore for 64 wonderful years; an adoring father to Robert W. (Bobby) Fillmore of Virginia Beach and Patti Fillmore Larson of Richmond, Va. and doting grandfather to Jonathan Garrett Fillmore of Chesapeake and Jason Scott Fillmore of Virginia Beach. He also leaves behind his dear brother, Al Fillmore of Hartford, Conn., and numerous nieces and nephews, friends and shipmates.

Bob had a distinguished 30 year career in the United States Navy, including serving 16 years with Naval Ferry Squadron VRF-31, based in Norfolk, Va., where he was Leading Chief. He moved aircraft all over the world and loved every second of it. In addition he was a retired civil servant and also retired from the Virginia Beach City Public School System. Afterwards, Bob and Rita traveled the world together, having the time of their lives.

He was an active member of Branch 5, Fleet Reserve Association of Norfolk, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, General MacArthur Memorial Post 392 of Virginia Beach, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Virginia Beach Aerie 3204 of Virginia Beach, Virginia Beach City Public School Bus Drivers & Assistants Association of Virginia Beach, the USS Philippine Sea Association of North Las Vegas, Nev., the Chesapeake Bay Foundation of Annapolis, Md., and various other organizations too numerous to mention.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 4, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 1457 Independence Blvd, Virginia Beach, VA, 23455, at 2 p.m..

At a later date, he will be buried at sea with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, 800 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, VA, 23504, 757-627-6599, or a charity dear to your heart. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
