Norfolk - Laura Rachel Moore, 92, of Norfolk passed away peacefully April 16, 2014. Rachel was born in Roanoke, October 23, 1921, a daughter of the late Charlie and Margaret Chockley. Rachel came to the Norfolk/Portsmouth area to work at Norfolk Naval Shipyard during World War II. It was there she met her husband of 63 years, the late William F. (Bill) Moore Jr. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Virginia, Ruth and Sis, and a brother, Charlie.
Her career was her family. She was surrogate mother to her late husband's Boy Scouts of Troop 5 in Ocean View and she shared many great adventures with them. Her home was always open to relatives from near and far and visitors included many foreign exchange students.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Margaret Tinaro and husband Pat of Norfolk, Mary Jarvis of Lexington, William A. (Billy) Moore and wife Frances of Norfolk, Cynthia York and husband Doug of Suffolk. She was Grandma Rachel to Brad, Tammy, Brian, Marcus, Philip, Dori, Rachel Ann and Hannah and great-grandmother to Kelly, Mariana, Allison, Calleigh, Baron, Will and Alexander. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Charles Moore and sister-in-law Marion Russell and a great host of nieces and nephews.
Rachel's family thanks the staff of Commonwealth Memory Care of Norfolk for their many years of compassion and kindness.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Gini Campbell Monday, April 21, at 11 a.m. at the Tidewater Drive Chapel of Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Norfolk. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at the funeral home.
