Virginia Beach - Caroline Boykin Willis Gordon, widow of Dr. Robert Lane Gordon, daughter of Caroline Boykin Willis and Joseph Norment Willis of Richmond, Va., passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 17, 2014. Caroline was 88. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she graduated from Vassar College in 1946 with a major in history. Awarded a graduate fellowship by the University of Wisconsin, she completed her Masters Degree in European History in June of 1947. Her husband accepted employment with the CIA, and for the next 10 years they lived overseas in a succession of postings: Colombo, Ceylon; Bagdad, Iraq; Kuwait City, Kuwait and Asmara, Ethiopia. Upon Dr. Gordon's retirement, the Gordon family relocated to Va. Beach in 1973.
Caroline enjoyed an exciting array of activities including Administrator of the Lynnhaven House, President of the VA Chapter of Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America, State Regent for the VA Daughters of the American Colonists, and Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was on the board of the Jamestown Society and also a member of the First Families of Virginia. In 2003, she moved to Westminster Canterbury where she enjoyed the "outstanding facilities and not having to cook." She is survived by two sons: Richard Willis Gordon and his wife Trish, and Paul Carter Gordon and his wife Diana. She is also survived by her daughter Caroline Gordon Wilkinson and husband Alan, and their daughter Caitlin. A memorial mass, led by Father Greg, will be held on Friday, April 25, 2014 in the Westminster Canterbury Common at 3pm. A reception will follow. Interment, in her beautiful pink casket, will be in the Willis family plot at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, VA on Saturday April 26 at 1 p.m. The H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments at 2002 Laskin Road is handling the arrangements. The family florist is Flowers, Wayne Jones. Caroline's favorite charity is the Va. Beach Volunteer Rescue squad.
