Abner W. Neal

Virginia Beach - Abner W. Neal, 82, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2014 from complications of Parkinson's Disease. Born in Hampton, he was the son of the late Jane M. and John Bragg Neal. Abner attended Hampton High where he was a Tidewater All-Star football player. He enjoyed many years of service in Optimist Club and retired from Taylor's Do-It-Center.

Abner is survived by his loving wife of 57 year, Norma; his daughter Jayne Gardner who adores him; his son-in-law Michael Gardner who so tenderly cared for him, and his grandaughter Lauren Gardner. He is also survived by his devoted brother J.B. Neal of Mathews; his beloved sisters, Alene Cofer of Norfolk and Louise Knemeyer of Williamsburg; family friend Rodger Midgette of Norfolk, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family would like to thank Gentiva Hospice for their care. We would also like to thank Lee Ann Mandaleris. There are not enough words for us to express our gratitude for your loving and compassionate care of daddy during his illness. Daddy you will forever live in our hearts and your sweet smile will be a picture we will cherish always. You are and will always be the sunshine of our lives.

The family will receive guest on Thursday, April 24, 2014 from 6-8pm at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Rd., Virginia Beach VA.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 25, at 1 p.m. at Colonial Grove Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to The Parkinson's Disease Foundation or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. You may offer your condolences at www.smithandwilliamskempsville.com.
