Virginia Beach - Anne Rees Evans Grandy, 90, beloved wife and mother of J. Walton (Walt) Grandy III and John W. Grandy IV, passed peacefully on April 26, 2014, at the Atlantic Shores Retirement Community.
Anne was born to Mary Jane and James A. W. Evans in Norfolk, Va. She attended Farmville State Teachers College (later Longwood College) and was married to Walt on October 23, 1942. She was a member of and served on the Altar Guild of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and was a member of the Women of Wesleyan. She was active in the Circle of Service of Kings Daughters Hospital and served as its Treasurer for many years.
A long-time resident on Chubb and Bradford Lakes in Bayside, she was a lover of life and all things living and beautiful and will always be remembered for her infectious smile. For many years, Anne devoted her artistic talents to floral design and the management of Grandy the Florist Inc. in Norfolk. After retiring, she devoted herself fully to her love of the natural life around her, her numerous pets, from Shorty to Joy, her winged friends, from pelicans to terns to chickadees to butterflies and the treasures of her daily Chesapeake Bay beach walks. And all the while she gave unfailing support to her husband of 72 years.
In addition to her husband and son, she is survived by three grandchildren, Anne Grandy Talley, Patricia Grandy Duffy, and John Walton Grandy Jr., and five great-grandchildren.
The family expresses the sincerest thanks to Geneva Elliot and the staff of Jewish Family Services for their care and comfort during Anne's illness.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, in the Norfolk Chapel of H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts. The family asks that donations in Anne's name be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 6 Herndon Ave, Annapolis, Maryland 21403 or The Humane Society of the United States 2100 L St. NW, Washington DC 20037.
