Virginia Beach - Ray Bruce Shumaker, 74, slipped away quietly on May 21, 2014. He was predeceased by his parents, Mary W. Shumaker and James D. Shumaker, and sister, Shirley York, of Richmond, Virginia.
He was a contractor by trade for most of his life, aiming for perfection in his work and often performing extras at no additional cost to achieve that perfection. Before moving to Virginia Beach from Richmond, he was an Army Reservist, volunteer EMT, Race Car Driver and avid billiards enthusiast. His caring and love for animals was unmatched, as was his love for his family. He often put the needs of friends above his own. These qualities will always be remembered by his wife, Ann; his daughters, Terry Shumaker and Debra Windland and her husband Robert "Bobby" Windland; granddaughters, Amy Windland, April Windland, and Heather Bruso; and great-granddaughter, Katya Jay-Windland.
The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel on Sunday, May 25, 2014 from 5 to 6 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Plaza Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 2128, Virginia Beach, VA 23450-2128 (www.plazarescue.com), or to The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 1500 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266 (see www.pancan.org for more information).
