Virginia Beach - Robert Spencer Stokes, 62, died on May 24 as a result of a scuba-diving training drill on Guam. He was born Dec 1, 1951 to the late Nathaniel Spencer Stokes and Ida Parker Stokes of New Bern, NC. Robert was the adored partner of Laurie Macpherson, Certified Nurse-Midwife at Tidewater Physicians for Women.
He graduated in 1986 from NC State with a degree in Mechanical engineering. He worked in his field as a nuclear engineer at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and was in Guam performing his duties in that capacity at the time of his off-duty accident.
Captain Stokes, retired, served proudly in the 51st and 118th Infantry as an armorer and later signal officer from 1970 to 1977 followed by his service in the North Carolina Army National Guard.
What Robert didn't know he could certainly and did research, and was known to be able to solve any problem, any time.

The family is certain that it would be Robert's wish to request any donations be made to the Wounded Warriors" Project in lieu of flowers. Online condolences may be made at hdoliver.com.
