Edward L. Oast Jr.

1929 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Edward L. Oast, Jr.

Portsmouth - Edward Linscott Oast, Jr., of Portsmouth, Virginia passed away June 13, 2014. He was born in Portsmouth on January 7, 1929 to Edward L. Oast and Margaret Lockhart Oast, who predeceased him, as did his beloved son-in-law, John E. McCombs. Ed graduated from Churchland High School in 1946 as an outstanding athlete and student leader and from VMI class of '50B as a distinguished cadet. In 1953, he graduated from W & L Law School, where he was an editor of the law review and member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He married Jean McKenzie of Selma, Alabama in 1953 and then served in the JAG Corps of the United States Air Force for two years. Mr. Oast enjoyed a long distinguished career as an attorney, having been inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He was a Past President of the Portsmouth-Chesapeake Bar Association. He retired from the practice of law as a senior partner with Williams, Kelly and Greer of Norfolk. Ed was also a member and Past President of the Portsmouth Rotary Club and served two terms on the Portsmouth City Council. An active member of Churchland Baptist Church, Ed served in many capacities, including as a deacon and trustee.

Mr. Oast is survived by wife of 60 years Jean McKenzie Oast; three children, Elizabeth Oast McCombs, Carolyn Porter Oast and Edward Linscott Oast, III and wife Stewart Penney Oast; four grandchildren, Carolyn Oast McCombs, Bricken Eldridge McCombs, Elizabeth McKenzie Oast and Edward Linscott Oast, IV; one sister Margaret Oast Mitchell and her husband Peter Richard Mitchell and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ed enjoyed golf, hunting, poker, Nags Head and Sandbridge. But his deepest love was for his God, his family and his country, all of whom he served so well. Even the ravages of old age could not diminish the accomplishments of a great man.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday June 17, 2014 in Churchland Baptist Church by the Rev. Clint Hopkins with a reception to follow in the church social hall. Burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial donations to Churchland Baptist Church, 3031 Churchland Blvd., Chesapeake, VA 23321 or the VMI Foundation, P.O. Box 932, Lexington, VA 24450. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth is handling the arrangements and condolences may be registered at bwfosterfuneralhome.com.
