David E. Goss

Virginia Beach - David E. Goss died on May 15, 2014. A native of Anderson, Indiana, he was born July 29, 1918 to Elmer and Ella Goss. David came of age amidst the hardships of the Great Depression. He attended Indiana University, but left before graduating to join the United States Army Air Corps in 1941. Lt. Goss flew as a bombardier/navigator in B-17 bombers in the European Theatre of WWII, and became a prisoner of war for seventeen months after his aircraft was shot down during a bombing mission over Germany. He was repatriated after he escaped from his German prison camp and reached advancing Russian lines in the closing months of the war. Lt. Goss left military service after the war, but rejoined the United States Air Force in 1952, serving his country with great dedication at home and abroad until 1967, reaching the rank of Major. A heart attack that year prematurely ended his beloved flying career. He later worked for the Veterans Administration for some years, counseling Vietnam era and other veterans, before another heart attack forced his final retirement. He continued to raise his family in Hampton, Virginia, where he lived until shortly before his death.

Maj. Goss was married to Anne for almost 50 years, from 1946 until her death in 2004. He is survived by his five children, David L. Goss of Casa Grande, AZ, John Goss of Chesapeake, VA, Diane Cardoso of Virginia Beach, VA, Sue Martineau of Elizabeth City, NC, and Robert Goss, of Chapel Hill, NC, and by his many grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 p.m., Sunday, June 22, 2014, at Holloman Brown Funeral Home's Kempsville Chapel, 1485 Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Military honors will be presented at 3:00 p.m.
