John Mercer Thomas Austin

Norfolk - John Mercer Thomas Austin, 14, passed away on Tuesday, June 17, 2014. He had just graduated from Blair Junior High School, was preparing to start Maury High School, and was accepted to The Norfolk Governor's School for the Arts. John was a Star Player for the Blair Championship Volleyball Team. He was a self -taught magician and musician, having taught himself to play the guitar. He also was a Docent at The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk. John was, as his family described him, "a GQ gorgeous" young man who was loved by all who knew him.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving parents, Anne Leigh Laudenslager Bailey and Jeremy Bailey of Norfolk; his brother, Caleb Bailey of Norfolk; paternal grandparents, Sandy and John Laudenslager of Norfolk; grandparents, Steve and Val Bailey of Tully, N.Y.; his uncle, David Laudenslager of Norfolk; uncles and aunts, Elizabeth Ulsh of Texas, Ryan Bailey of Miss., Caitlin Bailey of New York City, Zac Shalk of Norfolk, Kassi Balduzzi of Syracuse, N.Y.; and a multitude of friends who will miss him dearly.

A memorial celebration of his life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk with Rev. James Wood officiating. A reception will follow in the church social hall. All guests attending the service are requested to wear a blue ribbon in his memory. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Norfolk Governor's School for the Arts Foundation, 254 Granby St., Norfolk, VA 23510 ( foundation@gsarts.net). H. D.
