Joseph Weller

1945 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
Joseph Weller

Virginia - Weller, Joseph Nelson, 68, passed away peacefully at his home in Virginia Beach on June 14, 2014. Joe had been living with heart disease and succumbed to this ailment in his sleep. Joe was born in Norfolk on November 6, 1945 to Joseph L. Weller, Jr. and Florence F. Weller. He grew up in the Ghent neighborhood of Norfolk and attended Taylor School, Blair Junior High, and graduated from Maury High School in 1963, where he excelled on the tennis team. In 1967, Joe graduated from the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. After graduation, Joe enlisted in the U. S. Army where he specialized in Intelligence. He was stationed with the Army in Alaska and then in Germany, where he completed his enlistment. Following his service in the Army, Joe returned to Norfolk, where he completed his MBA at Old Dominion University.

Joe's business background led him to a variety of career opportunities, including an extended stay in Hawaii, which he dearly loved. He eventually returned to Tidewater where he worked in the computer industry and completed his career as the Program Director of the local NBC and Fox affiliates. Joe retired in 2007, but continued contributing to the community by doing volunteer work.

Joe loved the beach, the water, boating, and always had a love affair with books. It was hard to buy a book as a gift for Joe, because the odds are he had already read whatever you could buy! He liked games (he usually won) and had his own sense of humor. Joe was always current on local, national and international affairs, and enjoyed discussions about these topics. Joe would also never miss any event involving family.

Joe is survived by his sister, Nancy W. Castle and husband Christopher H. Castle, his nephews Christopher Nash Castle, Alexander H. Castle, his niece, Alison Castle Masuko and husband Wayde D. Masuko, and his great nephews, Christopher D. Masuko, and Julian N. Masuko. He is also survived by his many loving cousins: Elizabeth W. and Hal Hamberg, Virginia W. and Ronald Williams, Ellen B. and Robert Seabring, Mary Nash K. and John Rusher, Kathleen K. and Keith Oberg, Joshua Hamberg, Sara H. Upchurch, Kyle Williams, Alexis Williams, Virginia S. Watts, Courtenay S. Ebel, Thomas Rusher, David Rusher, Kelly Rusher, Colleen Oberg, Curtis Oberg, and Timothy Oberg.

A celebration of Joe's life is planned for a future date.
