Norfolk - Catherine (Kitty) Ayers Stevenson, 102, passed away on June 23, 2014 after a brief illness. She was born on February 5, 1912. A native and lifetime resident of Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late Mary Cynthia Garrison Ayers and Thomas Matellas Ayers. She was a graduate of Maury High School and Kee Business School. She retired as a clerk from the Norfolk Public School System.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Lee Roy Stevenson, and three sisters, Ethel Ives, Marie Fentress and Annie Ferrell. She is survived by her daughters, Cynthia Stevenson Holloway (Jack) of FL, and JoAnne Stevenson; grandchildren, Michael Thomas Holloway and Susan Lee Holloway of FL; and great-grandsons, Kevin Thomas Holloway (Heidi) of HI, and Brandon Michael Holloway (Kristi) of FL; and five great-great grandchildren, Alana and Damien of HI, and Paige, Kaylee, and Aubree of FL, and several nieces and nephews.
Kitty met her husband, Roy, at Park Place United Methodist Church and attended there until the organization of Christ United Methodist Church. When that church was organized in 1942, they were charter members. She was active in the Christ Church United Methodist Women and was a past president of the organization, member of the Adult Bible Class and YAH. Throughout her lifetime she was a faithful and devoted member of the church. In her younger years, she sang in the choir and worked in Vacation Bible School, and continued to participate in other church activities throughout her life.
Kitty loved her family and friends. She was a very devoted mother, grandmother, great and great-great-grandmother and was proud of her family. She always had a smile on her face for church friends when she saw them on Sunday mornings. She will be missed dearly by her family.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 27, 2014 at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. A celebration of her life will be held at Christ United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Derek Koolman and the Reverend Dr. Dan Phillips Abbott officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Christ United Methodist Church Endowment Fund.
A reception will be held in the Church Fellowship Hall following committal at the cemetery. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com
