William B. Hoover, Jr.

Norfolk - William Benjamin Hoover, Jr., 70, of the 7300 Block of Ruthven Rd, passed away July 7, 2014, surrounded by his family.

He was born to the late Sallie Frances Perdue Hoover and Dr. William B. Hoover, M.D., October 12, 1943 in Staten Island, New York. He graduated from Granby High School in 1961 and received a BS degree in Industrial Arts Education from Old Dominion University.

As an entrepreneur and businessman, he founded and developed Virginia Turf Management Associates, Inc., The Painted Lady Restaurant, Ghent Gardens, and Element Apartments in Norfolk's historic Ghent.

Throughout his 45 year career, he employed hundreds of people and executed operations in multiple states. He had a passion for researching, collecting, and restoring vintage watercraft. His love of local waterways and all things nautical compelled him to share his knowledge and anecdotes with everyone he encountered. He was an avid deltiologist and collector of Norfolk artifacts. He loved people and history, and he was a fascinating story teller.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Dickson Hoover of 45 years. His four sons; William Benjamin Hoover III and his wife Tara, John Perdue Hoover and his wife Heidi, Randolph Dickson Hoover, and Benjamin Nelms Hoover. He is also survived by six grandchildren; Savannah Frances Hoover, William Henry Hoover, Isabelle Atchley Hoover, John Perdue Hoover Jr., Hayden Elizabeth Hoover, and Reese Mackenzie Hoover. He was the proud uncle of; William Jasper Garris, III, Eleanor Brooks Garris Lively, Hunter Atchley Sigmon, his god daughter, John Robert Dickson, and Bryan Gunter Dickson, brothers in law William Doyle Atchley, Jr., M.D., Paul Eugene Dickson and his wife Katherine and god daughter Kyle Julian King. He was preceded in death by his son Henry Stassfort Hoover, his grandson Harold Porter Hoover, and his sister in law Anne Lynn Dickson Atchely.

A family burial will be followed by a memorial celebration of his life on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. in the Talbot Park Baptist Church, Norfolk VA with Rev. Dr. Tim Dixon officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to support Cardiovascular Research may be made to EVMS Foundation P.O. Box 5 Norfolk, VA 23501 or H. D.
