John Francis Eaton

Virginia Beach - John Francis Eaton, 99, passed away on July 13, 2014. He was born in Fair Haven, VT to the late Willard Eaton and Mary Tillotson Eaton. He served in the US Navy during World War II and the Coast Guard Reserves from 1959 through 1970 earning the rank of Commander. John was a naval architect in the private sector and government service and retired from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He was active in synchronized swimming and volleyball and was inducted into the U.S. Synchronized Swimming Hall of Fame for his work as sound coordinator for national championships, Olympic Trials and the 1984 Los Angles Summer Olympic Games. He was passionate about volleyball and was National AAU Volleyball Chairman. John wrote the first set of rules for Junior Olympic Volleyball which still serves as the basic foundation of junior volleyball in the United States today. He was honored in 1998 for his role in starting the AAU Junior Volleyball program. John was also Parliamentarian for the U.S. Olympic Committee and served in this post for 23 years.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Barbara Eaton; sons, Riley Eaton and Jon-Eric Eaton, Step-sons, Jim Van Dusen, Dick Van Dusen and Charles Van Dusen, and grandchildren, Jake and Meaghan; along with a host of extended family members and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 12pm, Wednesday, July 23, 2104 at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com
