Bernard J. "Joe" Sutton III

Norfolk - Bernard Joseph "Joe" Sutton III, 66, passed away peacefully in a local hospital on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 with his family by his side. He was an accountant for many years, having worked with Walter F. Hamill, Jr. CPA for over 28 years, and completing his career with Goodman and Company. Born in Macon, Georgia, he was the son of the late Mary McLendon and Bernard J. Sutton, Jr.

Joe was a graduate of Hampton High School and Old Dominion University and was a Paratrooper with the U. S. Army until 1975. Joe was an all-around great guy. His loves in life were his family, friends, dogs, surfing, and sports, especially ODU sports and The Big Blue Club. He was a dedicated coach for the Naval Base Little League and was instrumental in the rehab of the Fleet Park, the organization of the NBLL Girls Softball League and the expansion of the Vipers Softball Travel Team. For years, Joe was involved with the Boy Scouts of America and was an avid outdoorsman. Whether he was hiking, backpacking or biking, he was in his element on the Appalachian Trail.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife, Mary D. Sutton; a son, Bernard J. "Jay" Sutton IV; a daughter, Jennifer Leigh Bonsiewich and her husband, Adam; and his step-mother, Betty Sutton of Honea Path, S.C.

The family will receive friends at a visitation on Friday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Norfolk Chapel of H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the Episcopal Church of Good Shepherd with The Reverend Connie Jones Officiating. Burial will follow with military honors in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the .
