Maria G. Houmis

Norfolk - Maria G. Houmis, 83, departed this life on Friday, August 8, 2014 surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was born in Kardamyla Chios, Greece. Maria came to the United States and wed George Houmis, a local fine furniture maker in Norfolk. They had two children Carrie and Irene in which she raised in all the Greek traditions of her country. In 1959 she and her husband opened their own business, The Monticello Antique Shop in downtown Norfolk. They worked hard and prospered living the American dream. Maria was a devoted wife and mother and loved her family, friends and her church.

She was predeceased by her husband George. Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters Kyriakoula (Carrie) Spofford her husband John of Northeast Harbor, ME. Irene H. Close and her husband James Close of Norfolk, VA. Her grandchildren, George Spofford (Jamie) of Bar Harbor, ME, Nicki Dawes (Nick) of Portland, ME, Jacqueline Spofford of Bar Harbor ME, Zachary Close of New York City, Zoe Close of Norfolk; and great grand child Harrison Spofford of Bar Harbor, ME. She is also survived by her sister Eugenia Matheos and children, George (Stephanie) and Maria Waters, niece and nephew Katarina and Costa Matheos of MD, and sister Despina Matheos of Athens, Greece and her children, and many cousins and extended family members.

We would like to thank Dr. Gregg Clifford, Denise and Delores at Dedicated Care in Norfolk for their great care and understanding of our mother. We especially want to thank Daneen who she called Denise, Bonita who she called Teresa, Bonnie, and her favorite Alma, who she called Alba for their caring and compassion for the last two years. She loved them all.

Maria was a life long member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Norfolk and the Philoptochos Society.

A Trisagion Service will be held on Wednesday, August the 13th. at 6:00 p.m. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. on Colonial Ave. Norfolk. Funeral services will be held at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Granby St, Norfolk, VA on Thursday, August the 14th. at 11:00 a.m. with a graveside service following at Forest Lawn Cemetery on Granby St. There will be a luncheon at the church after the graveside service. The Rev. Presbyter George Bessinas, Cathedral Dean and The Rev. Protopresbyter Constantine Rogakos, Associate will be officiating the ceremony.
