Norfolk - Elizabeth Chambers Garrett passed away on August 14, 2014 after a long illness. She was born in Norfolk on September 26, 1944, the daughter of the late Harry Singleton Garrett and Laura Belle Creech Garrett.
She graduated from The Graham School and attended St. Mary's College and Old Dominion University. After working in Washington, DC for the Department of Commerce, she returned to Norfolk where she became a registered x-ray technologist and worked for many years at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital.
Betsy is survived by a sister, Singleton Garrett Osterhoudt, and her husband, Charles, of Roanoke, VA; a nephew, James Walker Carty, III, his wife, Elizabeth, and their children, Matthew and Madeleine; a niece, Laura Carty Bowers and husband, Robert, and their children, Katherine and Joseph, all of Charlotte, NC. She will also be missed by step nieces Katrina Filiatrault of Chalfont, PA and Karen Miller of Fincastle, VA and their families.
Also left to cherish her memory are many beloved friends who shared her journey through life and gave her unfailing love and support. The family would especially like to thank Pauline Petersen, Ken Kee , and Georgia and Steve Schatzman for their selfless devotion during the past year. We would also like to thank the staff at The Gardens of Virginia Beach, especially Judy, for their care and concern for Betsy. The family will also be eternally grateful to Kristie and her beautiful family for welcoming Betsy into their home with love and treating her as if she belonged there.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 22, 2014 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Freemason Street Baptist Church. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk chapel is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to the family at hdoliver.com
