Walter Fillmore Obituary
Virginia Beach - Brig. Gen. Walter Daniel "Dan" Fillmore, USMC (Ret.), 84, passed away on June 25, 2017. Dan was born in Baltimore, MD to the late William & Dorothy Fillmore.
Dan enlisted in the USMC in Feb. of 1951. Shortly after, he married his high school sweetheart, Bertha "Bert" Fillmore. In Dec. of 1953, Dan was commissioned as an officer. He served various posts that included Camp Lejeune, Little Creek, Quantico, Fort Benning and was the Executive Officer of the 3d Battalion, 1st Marines in Vietnam. He retired after 34 years of honorable service.
After retiring, Dan and Bert settled in Hampton Roads with their five children.
Dan loved to be surrounded by all his family and especially dear to his heart was his bride and high school sweetheart of 66 years, Bert. Dan will be remembered for his love of his family, his quick wit, his fondness for red wine and sweets and for all things USMC.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 66 years, Bert Fillmore; two sons, Stephen Fillmore (Lisa) and Thomas Fillmore (Nancy); three daughters, Kathy Groff (Gregg), Cynthia Layman (John), and Patricia Moyer; grandchildren, Roni, Lauren, Kristie, Preston, Courtney, Daniel, Zoe, Zachary, and Thomas; great-grandchildren, Kalli, Braylon, Maci, Jarrod, Kendall, Laila, Preslie, Gracie, Sadie Rose, and J.R.; niece, Mary Kremer and husband Jerry; and nephew, Bill and Joanne Wachter; along with a host of extended family and friends.
The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel on Tuesday, July 4, 2017, from 6 to 7 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 12 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Star of the Sea Catholic Church by Fr. Esteban DeLeon. Burial will be in Quantico National Cemetery on at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, July 6, 2017 with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to: Star of the Sea Charities, Cerebral Palsy Foundation or Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. To know a man like Dan was a special privilege I was given that I will always remember . But when a man like Dan would say to me MY FRIEND That was an honor I didn't take lightly. Dan was a friend not just to me but many many people.
It only took a second for me to know that Bert and Dan were special people . Heaven is a better place now that Dan is there . And we now have someone else up there praying for us

There is nothing anyone can say that eases the pain of loss, but I can hear the shouts of joy from all those Gunther's gathered at the gates of Heaven to greet Dan. May God bless all of you as you celebrate his life here on earth. I love you all, Aunt Ruth Gunther.
