Guy Durham Obituary
Guy Martin Durham PORTSMOUTH - Guy Martin Durham, 94, was surrounded by his family in his residence Sunday, Nov. 23, 2010, when he went peacefully home to be with his Lord. Born on Sept. 23, 1916, in Rockingham County, North Carolina, Guy was a proud U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Churchland Post No. 310, Monumental United Methodist Church, and the Adams Sunday School Class. Guy retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, serving as a woodcraftsman, locksmith, and finally as a Shop Planner in Shop No. 64 before retiring in 1980 with 38 years of service. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Dixon Durham; a grandson, Jimmie M. Durham Jr.; a stepson, David Gowdy; a sister, Stella Hainsworth; and two brothers, Raymond and Walter Durham. He is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Alice Kinsey Durham; a daughter, Jan D. Collins and husband Scott; a son, Jimmie M. Durham and wife Peggy; three stepchildren, Marcia G. Musselwhite and husband Donald, Cathy G. Redmon and husband Wayne and Karen G. Foster and husband Jim; two sisters, Margaret Sharpe and Barbara Walker; two brothers, Donald and David Durham; three grandchildren, Jill Byrd, Jonathan Collins and Kristin DiVito; eight stepgrandchildren, Regina Davis, Kenny and Scott Nisbet, Forrest Gowdy, Elizabeth Conroy, Jason and Brian Arban, and Lori Wade; 16 great-grandchildren; a special friend, Martha Smith; and a host of extended family and loyal friends. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Robert Friend and the Rev. T. M. Frye. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and at his daughter Jan's residence, 3641 Ithaca Trail, Suffolk, VA 23435, immediately following the services on Wednesday. Memorial donations may be made to Monumental United Methodist Church, Portsmouth.
